Note: The release you are looking at is Python 3.7.9, the final bugfix/security release with binary installers for the legacy 3.7 series which is now in the security fix phase of its life cycle. See the downloads page for currently supported versions of Python and for the most recent source-only security fix release for 3.7.

Binary installers are normally not provided for security fix releases. However, since 3.7.8 was the last 3.7.x bugfix release and there are security fixes published in 3.7.9 that apply to users of some of the binary installers provided with 3.7.8, we have made an exception for 3.7.9 and are also updating the Windows and macOS binary installers. We do not plan to provide further binary updates for future 3.7.x security releases.

On Sunday, Nov. 14, 2021, security researcher Luca Ebach discovered a new Emotet binary delivered through a Trickbot infection. By Monday, Nov. 15, the Emotet infrastructure had resumed normal operations and began generating a large volume of malicious spam.

HPROF is a dynamically-linked native library that uses JVM TI and writes out profiling information either to a file descriptor or to a socket in ascii or binary format. This information can be further processed by a profiler front-end tool or dumped to a file. It generates this information through calls to JVM TI, event callbacks from JVM TI, and through Byte Code Insertion (BCI) on all class file images loaded into the VM. JVM TI has an event called JVMTI_EVENT_CLASS_FILE_LOAD_HOOK which gives HPROF access to the class file image and an opportunity to modify that class file image before the VM actually loads it. Sound scary? It is, don't take BCI lightly. In the case of HPROF the BCI operations only instrument and don't change the behavior of the bytecodes. Use of JVM TI was pretty critical here for HPROF to do BCI because we needed to do BCI on ALL the classes, including early classes like java.lang.Object. Of course, the instrumentation code needs to be made inoperable until the VM has reached a stage where this inserted code can be executed, normally the event JVMTI_EVENT_VM_INIT.

If you'd prefer not to use Git, you can get the source with the 'Download ZIP' button on the right. The built-in Windows zip utility will mark the contents of zip files downloaded from the Internet as unsafe to execute, so right-click the zip file and select 'Properties...' and 'Unblock' before decompressing it. Third-party zip utilities don't normally do this.
